Synopsis:
While the Vault Heroes are recovering form the sudden attack
on the asylum, an alarm sounds from the depths of the
wrecked building. Accompanied by Crimebuster, Captain Flash,
and the Black Owl, a fearful Dr.Weir rushes down to
Sub-Level 5. There the heroes find the bodies of the
murdered attendants as Weir explains how these lower levels
were designed to incarcerate some of the Vault Heroes'
deadliest enemies. Unknown to them, these same villains are
on the surface, inflicting the first casualties of the War
Iron Jaw brutally tears out the throats of Air Male and
Stampy as the Monster menaces Cave Girl and Kitten. Back at
Femforce HQ, Nightveil's mystic senses detect the chaos at
the asylum, and she quickly departs with Dragonfly in tow.
Left behind, Ms. Victory watches helplessly as She-Cat
snickers at Jen's inability to assert her leadership. |

2nd Story: Garganta, the 50-ft Woman (20 pgs)
Credits:
The Count, story / pencils; Mark Propst, inks; Walt Paisley, letters;
Bill Black, edits
Synopsis:
Dr. Carol Heisler is one of the researchers on the V-47 formula which
the government wants modified to create more paranormals to combat
the Black Shroud. She-Cat, Stardust, and Synn are on hand with Tom
Kelly as Dr. Heisler tests the new compound on herself. The Heroines'
apprehension over the rushed, sloppy work in developing the formula
proves well-founded as Carol begins experiencing a strong, painful
reaction to the formula. Across town, an explosion awakens Jen Burke,
and she dons her Ms. Victory outfit to investigate. Amid the rubble
of the government complex, she finds a battered Femforce and Kelly,
who sends her after Dr. Heisler, who is now rampaging out of control.
When Ms. Victory catches up with her, Carol unleashes bolts of raw
energy at her, forcing Jen to take her out with one powerful blow.
The reprieve is short-lived, however. Carol revives and grows to
gigantic proportions, now having even more immense power to accompany
her mindless rage.
Regrouping after Carol's initial attack, the Femforce confer with
the scientists, who tell them that a powerful combined attack on
"Garganta," as she has been dubbed, may force her to expend all of
the V-47 in her system and return to normal. As reported in Stella
Stargaze's broadcast, the plan works and Carol's size, personality,
and age are restored, though she retains only sketchy memories of her
Garganta experience.

Notes:
Carol Heisler is originally an elderly brunette; as Jen observes,
the compound makes her youthful and turns her hair silver....
Heisler's real motivation behind taking the formula is to cure her
arthritis.... Heisler's power first manifests itself as energy bolts
fired from her hands while still essentially normal-sized; only after
she is KO'd by Ms. Victory does she grow.... Ellen McFarland, the
born-again reporter, is responsible for giving Carol the name
Garganta.... As the second panel on page 2 indicates, at least some
of the Femforce members are aware that the new Ms. Victory is Joan's
daughter, although this does not lessen the hostility felt toward
her.... Synn is in the unusual position of point in the attack on
Garganta, leading the charge with a fiery cry of defiance as Stardust
and Ms. Victory follow.... Ellen and Stella are listed as opponents
because of what they say about the FF; Hidalgo, though a future
enemy, is more of a nuisance than an outright foe at this point.
