Synopsis:
As the battle continues from last issue, Nightveil draws the
Black Shroud away from Paragon and is attacked herself. The
Shroud is apparently brought down from behind by Tara's
knife, and Nightveil brings her and Dr. Weir back to the
surface while Paragon, in a Samson-like effort, brings down
the caverns and buries the well. The victory is short-lived,
however, as the Shroud emerges from below, taunting the
heroes by telling them the well Paragon sealed off was only
an illusion. As an enraged Paragon rushes the Shroud, his
attack is repelled by an earlier version of himself, in
reality a genetically re-engineered Kronon. As Nightveil and
Paragon take on Captain Paragon, Tara finds the
wheelchair-bound Roger Brant muttering how the spirits
within him that comprise the Shade have fallen under the
power of the Shroud. In an agonizing burst, the Shade erupts
from Roger's body and, under the Shroud's control, brings
down Nightveil. Dragonfly's old enemy Psiborg attacks Dr.
Weir while the Shroud's disciples Jong Sue and Yong Cha Chae
take out Tara. Suddenly, as before, the four heroes find
themselves before the Shroud's throne, who confesses that
the impending boredom of godhood is driving him to make this
last great battle as challenging and memorable as possible.
In his arrogance, he releases the quartet, inviting them to
gather all possible strength for the upcoming epic
confrontation. |

Notes:
Although Tara was one of the earliest AC characters to
meet the Shade, this episode is the first time that she
learns his other identity.... The Captain Paragon in service
to the Shroud does not realize he is a Kronon and believes
he is the real Cap; he also recognizes Laura as the Blue
Bulleteer and does not understand her new powers.... The
first sign of schism among the souls that comprise the Shade
appears in the Shade Special 1 (2); his actual possession by
these few souls takes place in Dragonfly 7.... The Shroud's
comments on his teaming with Dragonfly to defeat the Psiborg
and his plan to use the Anti-Paragon as a replacement for
the original are explained in more depth in the
retro-continuity Dragonfly story in FF 31 (2).... Paragon,
despite several meetings with Tara, is still formal to the
point of calling her Ms. Fremont.... This is the end of the
first stage of the Shroud battle, as each side begins
marshaling its forces for the final war.... The Shade is
listed as an opponent (but not a villain) due to the
Shroud's influence.... Anti-Paragon is not given that name
until FF 31. |

John Dell III, inks; Walt Paisley, letters
Synopsis:
A "midnight marauder" is plaguing Orlando, and She-Cat is assigned
temporary duty with the police. Shannon Smith, a friend of hers on
the force, gets kidnapped one night while acting as bait, and She-Cat
herself is clubbed and taken captive when she goes under cover. She
awakens to find herself prisoner of an alien group of turtle men,
renegades of their own home planet seeking to develop a new mixed
race on Earth by breeding with human females . Their experiments to
date have not been successful, as She-Cat learns when she frees
herself and discovers a pile of dead womens' bodies - Shannon's among
them. She is again taken captive and told by the aliens that the
average human female body can not physically withstand the aliens'
breeding efforts, and that they hope to do better with her. As the
police find out, however, when they track down the turtle men's lair,
She-Cat's animal energy was to much even for the extraterrestrials,
who lay in a lifeless pile around her.
