CUSTOM RECIPES

MARVEL 9" Dolls:

Doctor Octopus
Base:
Exclusive Premiere's Grampa Munster, Toybiz 10" Doctor Octopus, Mattel Fred Flintsone (movie).

I basically used "Flash! Ahh-ahhhhhhhh!" 's recipe for Dr Octopus, wth a few modifications of my own. One of which is the usage of Flintstone's head (aka John Goodman) onto which I sculpted extra hair and glasses. It's in pretty good scale with the 9" body. The boots and gloves are generic FC ones, painted in purple acrylics. The costume is handsewn from some skirt lining.

Spider-man
Base:
Spider-man FC doll and clothes, some Big-headed soccer figure whom I thought looked like Parker.

I always wanted a Spidey FC (loved my mego version), but the constipated Parker head always bothered me. I realised that those small sports figurines with the oversized heads actually go nicely on an FC body, bringing the head proportions closer to that of the DC 9"s. So I found a suitable one, cut it off at the neck, drilled a hole and squeezed it onto the FC neck peg. Epoxy putty was used to give the head a more Parkerish look and features, and was also used to shape the new neck.

The costume was modified at the wrists (the hands were reshaped with glue and repainted), and the mask was taken apart and resewn for a better fit. New spider-eyes were added using vinyl stickers and fabric paint.

Venom
Base:
Sabretooth FC, Godzilla keychain.

Sabretooth was destined to be Venom. When the doll first showed, the first thng that stuck in my head was that the bulky size and claws were perfect Venom fodder. The head is a heavily sanded down and modified Godzilla head from some keychain, which allows the jaw articulation. The bendable tongue is a piece of bendable wire covered in multiple coats of mold latex and caulk, glued to the back of his mouth.

The costume is handswen Spandex, and the spider insigia is made from a vinyl sticker.

Ghost Rider
Base:
FC Sting, Pez candy dispenser, Silver Surfer Nova

Ghost rider is just too cool not to be an FC. His body, jacket and boots are all modified from what comes with the FC Sting. The jacket detail was sewn in, the spikes are cast mold latex, and the studs are just globs of 3D fabric paint. The chain is just a normal one, and was sunned and left in the open to give it a less shiny surface.

GR's head is a Halloween Pez dispenser, which was resculpted at points for a meaner look. The skull was then rubbed with wall-filler latex for the rough 'boney' texture. The flames are modified from a Nova accessory. everything is painted with acrylics, and a wash was done to bring out the details of the skull. the head was then attched using a combination of superglue and wall-filler latex.

CUSTOM RECIPES

MARVEL vs Capcom 2:

Jill Valentine
Base:
Jill Valentine (Resident Evil; Toybiz)

A simple custom. Bought an extra Jill figure, popped out the head and beret, threw away the head and resculpted one from scratch using the artwork from Marvel vs Capcom 2 as reference. The weapons and zombies are all taken from Toybiz's Resident Evil line.

Amingo
Base:
Big the Cat (Sonic the Hedgehog; Toy Island), Blue 'David Letterman' Alien (Space Jam, Mattel)

Took apart Big the Cat, and modified the armholes so they would hold the SpaceJam Alien's arms. Cut off the ears, then used half a gashapon ball/bubble as a base for the head. Lots of putty, filler and sanding, followed by spray-painting and adding of details. The sombrero was made from the bottom of a tupperware, putty and craft string. The pants are "peachskin", cut and glued to fit. The wraparound and pouch are made from curtain material with acrylic paint used for the details. The cactus buddy is 90% Super Sculpey; the base of the mini-sombrero is a small gashapon ball/bubble cut to shape.

Miss Tron Bonne
w/ Servbot (Kobun)
Tron Base:
Lilith (Darkstalkers;Toybiz), Izzy (Digimon, Bandai)

Servbot Base: Marker pen, lots of different Lego-ish figures. No idea what they were.

Tron is basically a Lilith (finally, a good use for that monstrosity!), with hands from some Toybiz spare parts I have lying around. Her arms were chopped up and repositioned slightly. Everything else on the body is hand sculpted. The head used to be "Izzy", a Digimon trainer. Chopped off the neck and hair, recarved the eyes and resculpted the face and added hair using screenshots from "The misadventures of Tron Bonne" as reference.

The Kobun was cobbled together from a variety of Lego ripoffs that I scoured the fleamarkets and Salvation Army stores for. The head was cut from the tail-end of a marker pen. Vinyl stickers were used for his eyes and mouth. Additional sculpted was done.

Thanks to Matt "Frenzy" Lind for the excellent Tron/Lilith suggestion!

Colonel William F. Guile
Base:
Iolaus (Hercules; Toybiz)

Built up Iolaus's chest for the bigger, squarer, Guile look. The head was severely shaved and resculpted at the hair, ear and brow areas, and putty and sanding were used to give him the prominant cheekbone look. The pants are curtain material, painted, and the belt's a ribbon. Vinyl, curtain material and craft string were used to create his boots. The dogtags are made from a tiny piece of plastic cut from some action figure bubble, attached to a small chain.

"Many thanks to Hansen at City of Toys for use of his shop"
