Belts and pouches: Made from elastic bought at fine fabric
stores everywhere. A snap was sewn on to the elastic. The
elastic was colored with pens. The pouches were made from
the same elastic then sewn into place on the belt with gold
strands from a curtain tassel. Legion symbol was printed
from a CAD program and glued to the belt.
Legion Flight Ring:
Made in a CAD program and glued to the appropriate finger.
Paint: All figures were primed with Krylon gray primer.
Areas to be finished in bright colors were then primed again
with white primer. Acrylics were used and the figures sealed
with Dulcote. For shiny finishes, decoupage glue was used as
a sealer.
Stands: All stands were treated the appropriate icon.
The symbol was made in CAD and decoupaged to the stand. Stand
was sealed with Dulcote.
Andromeda: The head is from a Dark Chylde figure and held
in place with a snap. The rest of the figure is from an Alpha
Flight Aurora. Her “
flaps” were made from elastic with details sewn in place.
Small lines in the figure were filled with model filler and
sanded smooth. Boot cuffs were made from super sculpey. I also “dusted” her
fleshtone legs with a brown pastel in order to match her tan
face a little better.
Ferro: The mask is super sculpey. The head is from a Cloak
figure. The body is an Ice Man from one of the reissue KayBee
waves.
Leviathan: The body is a Giant Man from the Avengers Six pack.
The head came from a Dominick Hascek (?) hockey figure and
is epoxied in place. The shoulder and kneepads were made from
hot glue attached to elastic. The elastic has snaps sewn on
it to keep it in place. The glue was filled with model filler
and then sanded smooth. The wristbands are just elastic sewn
end to end. Giant Man required extensive filling, dremelling,
and sanding. Small files were used to create the six pack found
on most superheroes.
M’Onel: Bug Busters Spider-man body with a Bruce Wayne
head. Can’t remember the line the head came from though.
The cape was hand sewn with wire sewn into the edges for poseability.
The little thingies on the cape were an acrylic bead that I
cut in half, painted, and sewed into place.
Night Girl: The body, head, and legs were from a bald-headed
Elektra figure. I couldn’t bring myself to use the stiff
arms that originally came with the Elektra figure. I replaced
them with better-articulated arms from Storm in the X-Men six-pack.
The beehive is super sculpey, the cape is hand sewn and held
in place by a snap. The star is a piece of confetti that my
wife had hanging around and is glued onto the cape. Her “
owl” chest emblem was created in a CAD program and decoupaged
in place.
Superboy: Bug Busters Spider-man body with a Superboy head
epoxied in place. Hand sewn cape with wire installed for poseability.
I was trying to duplicate his 1970’s look with his cape.
I like the edges, but probably have a little too much cloth
in the back. Chest emblem was created in CAD and decoupaged
in place.
Supergirl:
The cape and skirt were hand sewn. If you can’t tell,
I try to use clay as little as possible in my customizing.
Cloth allows me to retain articulation and is less likely to
become damaged when a figure falls off of the shelf. The skirt
was sewn to the belt. The head is from a Dagger figure and
is held in place by a snap joint. I used a re-issued Rogue
for Supergirl’s torso and arms. The legs
are from a Magik figure. I was able to create waist articulation
in this figure using cured epoxy.
Thunder: Head is from a Robot Wars Jubilee. The gap in her
glasses was filled in with clay and hair sculpted over to create
the headband look. The head is attached to a Dagger body by
a snap joint. The cape is hand sewn with wire at the bottom
for limited poseability. The yellow on the cape is fabric paint
(a suggestion from my wife). The cape rope is from a curtain
tassel.
Timberwolf: This figure was such a pain, but it really shouldn’t
have been. A Super Nova head was epoxied to a Bug Busters Spider-man
body. I started painting him in the most recent version paint
scheme, but this figure begged to be an older version. So I
scraped off all of the paint with an exacto knife, sanded him
down again, primed him, and painted him over. Pain pain pain
pain pain pain pain. It’s hard
to tell but I dusted him with brown and black pastel chalk
to make his paint scheme less static. The chest wolf is decoupaged
on, and has little orange eyes that are hard to see in this
picture.
Ultra Boy: The old Bug Busters Spider-man body with a Battle
Blasters Gambit head epoxied in place. The chest emblem was
decoupaged in place. The bracers and boots were made from clay.
This is one of my earlier belts. I got better at hiding the
stitches.
Note: All heads
that were “epoxied” in place, still
retain articulation at the neck. |
