I try to keep all my figures in line with what Ron Kenyon has
defined as 5 1/2" scale. This encompasses most of the old
Toy Biz Marvel figures, but is smaller than recent releases. Its
getting harder to find fodder.
Iron Man
To quote Arkenyon : "Heroes Return Iron Man is simply too
big (+5 inches) and weird-looking, so he will have to be destroyed."
That's just what I did to make this custom Ryan-Grell Iron Man
as he currently appears in Avengers & Iron Man. The legs
and arms, which are badly out of scale were replaced. The new
lower legs came from the animated Avenger's armored Falcon figure,
attaching at the knees with articulation. Some sculpting of
armor at the thighs. The arms and shoulder pads are from a PowerRangers
figure - the shoulder pads slighlty resculpted by dremeling.
The hands are from a Dr. Doom figure. Some details were added
with milliput.
The torso was extensively resculpted by dremeling and sanding
to give the appearance of overlapping plates and to add the
pentagonal chest beam. The head was also resculpted and details
around the neck and shoulders added with milliput. The pods
at the waist were added by screwing in buttons and milliputing
over.
The metallic look was achieved by priming with white and then
several coats of aluminum paint before coating with red or gold.
Several layers of clear gloss were applied.
A yellow translucent tube was added around the neck, secured
to the figure by drilling two holes in the chest into which
the ends of the tube were inserted. This preserved the bend
in an otherwise somewhat rigid material. The chest beam is transluscent
yellow plastic cut from a report cover.
Black Panther
This figure is a slightly modified Marvel Gold Black Panther.
His belt was dremeled off. Some gold jewelry details were added
with milliput - a new belt and wristlets. A collar was added to
the cape with some black cloth and wire for consistency with his
current look.
Falcon
This is a slighlty modified Marvel Gold Falcon. The gauntlets
were resculpted and the figure was repainted to match his new
costum design. For flesh tones, I favor flat paints rather than
gloss, to get a more natural appearance.
Warbird
The base figure is Storm (not sure what line) Silver Sable's head
and a repaint. The sash is cloth. |
