Firstly let me apologize profusely for the quality of the photos.
You really can't see the detail in them. The figures really
do look a helluva lot better close up, but we worked with what
we had, and for that they look ok! A big thanks to my good buddy
Chris who helped me take these photos. Maybe one of these days
we can find me a good macro lens camera! Also thanks to my lovely
wife Jenn, for all of the encouagement, support, and inspiration.
I love you! :)
Nightwing - This is one of the more simple customs. A repaint
of the recent Apollo figure. The etched lines of his symbol were
filled in and smoothed over, and everything was repainted. (did
the mask by hand). His fighting sticks are q-tips cut down to
size, painted and glued in place. This was a figure I did for
my wife, who is a big Nightwing fan. I know some of you are saying,
"where are his gauntlets and booties?" Well, I'll tell
ya....... I tried a couple of things before I began in earnest
on the figure, and nothing really looked right. We even looked
at some other customs to see what others did, but she didn't care
for the way they looked. I went ahead and did it w/out the gauntlets
and booties, figuring I can always add them later, and she really
dug it! She said he looks sleeker and more agile that way. So
there you have it.
Starman of 1951 - My second DCD custom. Actually 2nd to start
4th to finish. Didn't like the way it was going, put him away
for over a year and finally got creative again. He started out
as a DCD Lightning Lad. I dremeled off the hair, and used putty
to make the mask. Cut the cape to shape. The stars on the wrists,
and the points on his head are made from card stock. Painted,
and detailed, and he's done!
Starman (Jack Knight) - This was a MacFarlane Movie Maniacs
Shaft Figure. All I did was decapitate my DCD Jack Knight, (and
remove his right hand), and switch the parts. I had already
painted the goatee on him, so all I had to do was the clothing.
The tin-star badge, as well as the Star Symbol on the back of
the jacket is hand painted. (yes, I had a MAJOR headache afterward).
I took the guts out of the staff (I might use the light for
something cool.), and repainted it gold, and detailed it out.
This is one that I am most proud of.
Pocket Hero: The Modern Shade - The first PH custom ever! (at
least the 1st I've ever heard of) A simple repaint of the Shade
PH.
The Huntress - OK I saw someone else do this, and really liked
it. The figure looked good, but the paint job was kind of...not
great. Excellent effort, and a grand idea. I took it and ran with
it, and made a few changes. It is a Sydney Savage body from the
Danger Girl series. I tried to keep the head, but it was just
a tad too out of whack for my tastes. Then I remembered I had
the Dinah Lance head in my parts box, so with a little fidgeting,
I got it to work. The belt buckle is the head of a thumbtack.
I got the idea literally by stepping on the damn thing. Pain does
inspire sometimes. The various compartments, and packs on the
belt are bits of scrap plastic, the rope is some embroidery thread.
The crossbow is temporary. Its from an Animated Poison Ivy. The
cape......yes the cape. Its not Bat-like I know. Its from a Dr
Mid-Nite figure (more on that later on) For the time being it'll
do. I may change it someday, but the only batcapes I had were
way to small, and I wasn't going to settle for that. Also you'll
notice 2 things, the arms of the costume are long sleeves, and
she appears to be wearing tights/pantyhose. I was going to hook
up the dremel, and sand away the wrinkles in the "fabric"
on the legs and arms, and my wife made the comment "you know,
if a woman is going to be wearing leather boots that high on her
legs, and gloves that long, she's going to want to have something
between them and her skin, other wise she's going to chafe real
bad." So.....there you go, a little more realism in your
action figure world!
The Spectre-This is a repaint of the original glow in the dark
version. Not much to add. I wanted to detail him out more. I liked
the Glow in the Dark, but he lacked definition, so.....VERY easy
custom.
Captain Marvel - Haven't found a Cap yet that I'm truly happy
with. This is the old Hasbro DC Heroes figure repainted and detailed
out. Gave him some skin tone, and highlights, Filled in the Muscles
a bit better, and painted the yellow bits gold. Makes him look
a whole lot better, but man.... Someday.... (maybe that Samaritan
figure will work....hmmmmmmm?)
Mr Teriffic - Began life as a Dr Mid-Nite (see Told you we'd get
to him later on). I dremmeled off the goggles, and shaped the
eyes a bit, then smoothed everything out, made the collar, and
front flap of his tunic out of thin paper and glued them in place.
Painted everything else. I cheated and used a sharpie for the
buttons tho, and I do need to redo the Fair Play. This was my
FIRST DCD custom 2 years ago, and the first figure I had done
after not doing one for about 5 years! So for being out of practice,
I think he looks great! (Especially up there on my JSA shelf!)
Obsidian:
Very simple repaint of Mr. Miracle. Added some detail with some
cut and shaped styrene, and there you go. I made this for a friend
of mine who really digs the character. He's trying to talk me
into a Jade to go with it! |
