When the job is too small… when well-adjusted, over-powered
teenagers are too busy to be consulted, you have to rely on
The Substitutes. The Legion of Substitute Heroes has long been
a fan favorite. They represent the ultimate underdog and give
the “geek” in all of us a little bit of comfort;
For The Subs may be meek now, but by darn they have potential.
Most have made appearances in the Post-Boot era, but those
appearances have been very minor.
Color Kid: Ulu Vakk of Lupra, at least in the pre-boot era,
was Color Kid. Color Kid can change the color of objects. Although
his power seems pretty lame, it has come in handy on occasion.
I just wish I could have him with me anytime I’m in traffic.
Stone Boy: Stone Boy is Dag Wentim of Zwen. Stone Boy is
his own personal Medusa, without the snake hair. His super
power
is turning to stone. Once in stone form, he can’t move.
Now you know why he’s a Sub.
Chlorophyll Kid: Chlorophyll Kid, Ral Benem of Mardru, can
increase or decrease the growth rate in plants. You might be
wandering how he got his powers… he fell into an experimental
vat of fertilizer in his dad’s laboratory one day. At
least it wasn’t radioactive fertilizer that bit him.
Growing plants may not be much of a super power as far as superheroing
goes, but I’m sure there are a few planets that would
like him to help with their crops.
Infectious Lass: Drura Sehpt of Somahtur, aka Infectious
Lass, has the power to make anybody sick... and not just from
the
mucus hanging from her arms either. She carries all types of
little bugs around just in case. You’d think this power
would come in handy, but Drura has had trouble controlling
it. Now you know why she’s a Sub.
Fire Lad: Staq Mavlen of Shwar has the ability to shoot flames
out of his mouth. Destined to be a Sub from the moment of his
birth, Fire Lad found that controlling his fire breath was
rather difficult in the high oxygen content of the planet Earth.
Ambush Bug: Ambush Bug made an appearance in the Legion of
Substitute Heroes special. A comic relief type character seemed
a natural for the Subs’ issue, especially once he stole
Superman’s cape. That teleportation power of his sure
comes in handy. |
