About CustomCon

CustomCon is a fictional toy show showcasing the work of several customizers. You will not find these toys in your local toy store.

Angel

To make the Angel, I began by reworking an X-Men Evolution Magneto. His armor needed to be sanded down and his face reworked. The wings presented the biggest problem, though. At first I tried sculpting them using Magic Sculpt on top of the X-Men Boxset Set Angel wings. This went on for months and months until I stumbled across a Harvey Birdman action figure. Wouldn't you know it? The wings were perfectly on-model with the animated Angel design. All it took was a little paint to make them the proper color. There are also pegs on each wing that allow them to flap if necessary.

Avalanche

To make my custom Avalanche, I began buy reworking a DC Direct Impulse figure. His body was lean and stylized enough to fit in stylistically with that of X-Men Evolution. I removed Impulse's feet and replaced them with boots from an X-Men Evolution Logan figure. The shoulder pads were reworked from an X-Evo Magneto and superglued in place. Clear vinyl is used for the remainder of the surface details.

For the head, I used a head from an X-Men Evolution Spyke. I sanded down his hair and used elements from a Nightcrawler figure to rebuild it. A clear test tube was trimmed down to form Avalanche's helmet.

Beast

For the most part, Beast is just a heavily reworked X-Men Evolution Juggernaut. I sliced apart the forearms and extended them using a metal support rod. I did the same for the calves and feet. The hands and feet themselves actually came from an old ToyBiz X-Men Beast figure. All of Juggernaut's armor had to be sanded down. This left the surface of the figure a mess, but luckily Magic Sculpt helped smooth out all rough spots. As you can see from the photo above, I used a *lot* of Magic Sculpt.

Blob - Combat Gear

The Combat Gear Blob is a reworking of the original ToyBiz Blob. New arms from a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles villain have been added to a mostly Magic Sculpt torso. The legs and feet are original sculpts.

Cannonball

To make the Cannonball custom, I began by reworking a DC Direct Impulse figure. Just like I mentioned on my Avalanche commentary, the Impulse body was lean and stylized enough to fit in stylistically with that of X-Men Evolution. I removed Impulse's feet and replaced them with boots from an X-Men Evolution Logan figure. The head comes from a Disney Atlantis Milo figure. I might make the figure a tad larger over all, but he's proportionate by himself. Magic Sculpt is used to finish off all the other surface details.

Cannonball was always my favorite of the New Mutants. I can't express just how happy I was when he appeared in the X-Men Evolution cartoon.

Jubilee - 'New Recruits' Gear

To make the custom Jubilee, I began by reshaping a Battle Blasters Jean Grey figure. I sanded down her curves to make her match a bit better to the angular look of the X-Men Evolution character designs. Jubilee needed to be slightly slimmer than some of her fellow teammates, so I replaced the Jean legs with those from an X-Men Evolution Storm (shortened just a bit). Her head is from an Animated Avengers Wasp figure, though the hair is all created from Magic Sculpt.

Magma - 'New Recruits' Gear

To make this custom, I used a recipe very similar to her 'powered up' version. Magma primarily uses a ToyBiz X-Men Classics Jean Grey figure as a base. Her arms were sliced apart and repositioned and her chest was sanded down to better match the style of the other X-Men Evolution characters. The hands come from an X-Evo Storm and her feet come from a Princess Fiona figure. This makes Magma just a hair taller. Now she fits in fine scale-wise. The head is a repainted Anime styled Rogue head.

She's a bit boring on her own, but fits in nicely with the rest of the group.

Multiple

The recipe for Multiple is similar to my X-Evo Iceman custom. Multiple uses a Nightcrawler figure as a base that has been reworked a bit to make him slightly shorter. The head comes from a Kurt Wagner figure. Kurt's head is a little less sinister than his Nightcrawler counterpart. The hair and other elements were sculpted with Magic Sculpt.
