Jason of Star Command

"Jason of Star Command" was one of the few live-action series created by Filmation.  It aired during the Saturday morning cartoons on CBS from 1978-1980.  It was serialized in the style of the old "Buck Rodgers" and "Flash Gordon" films, and it certainly captured that essence, with a 1970's twist.

"Jason of Star Command" is a mostly-forgotten classic that deserves far more recognition than it receives.  I've created this custom figure set to give my generation a blast from their past, and to pique the curiosity of younger sci-fi fans who may have never heard of it.

Jason of Star Command

JASON

Jason is the leading hero in the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command", played by Craig Littler.  In the palm of his hand is W1K1, his spunky little robot pal.

I used a DC Direct JSA Golden Age Green Lantern figure for his body and the head from a Mockingjay Finnick figure.

DRAGOS

Dragos, self-titled Master of the Cosmos, is the leading villain in the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command", played by Sid Haig.

I used a WWE Big Show figure as his base. I used an actual glass rhinestone for his eye.  His cape is from a MOTUC Chief Carnivus figure.

CAPTAIN NICOLE DAVIDOFF

Captain Nicole Davidoff is an officer of Star Command in season one of the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command", played by Susan O'Hanlon (AKA Susan Pratt).

I used a Mockingjay Katniss Everdeen figure to make Nicole.

PROFESSOR E.J. PARSAFOOT

Professor E.J. Parsafoot is the quirky scientific advisor at Star Command and an instructor at Space Academy in the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command", played by Charlie Dell.

For the body, I used a "Mockingjay" Finnick figure. Finnick's head was used for the Jason figure. For Parsafoot's unique features, I had a hard time finding the right face for him. I ended up using a WWE Bo Dallas figure's head. I shaved down his jawline and added a larger forehead, as well as crazy hair, eyebrows and a mole.

SAMANTHA

Samantha, the mysterious agent of Star Command from season two of the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command." She was played by Tamara Dobson, most famous for her role as Cleopatra Jones.

For Samantha's body, I used a MOTC Angella figure. Her head was from a MOTUC Netossa figure. I usually post a fully sculpted, unpainted photo but I forgot to take one this time.

COMMANDER CARNAVIN

Commander Carnavin is the leader of Star Command from season one of the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command." Commander Carnavin is played by James Doohan, best known as Scotty from "Star Trek". In fact, he left this series after season one because he had to go film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

Canarvin is wearing the exact same costume that Commander Gampu (Jonathan Harris, previously Dr. Smith from "Lost in Space") wore in Filmation's previous TV series, "Space Academy". "Jason of Star Command" is a spin-off of "Space Academy".

I know the most obvious figure to use would have been a Star Trek/Scotty figure. And there actually is one in 7" scale. The problem is it's going for over $50. I started looking through the WWE figures for a close likeness and ended up finding a pretty good one! This is a Sgt. Slaughter figure without his hat and sunglasses.

COMMANDER STONE

Commander Stone, a blue-skinned Tantalusian, is the leader of Star Command from season two of the live-action Filmation series "Jason of Star Command." Stone, the strict "by the book" Commander, is played by John Russell. Known for starring in countless Westerns and war films, this was his first and only sci-fi role. According to the JoSC DVD commentary, he really hated having his skin painted blue.

The body was the WWE Bo Dallas body that was left over after I used the head for Parsafoot. The head is the MOTUC Standor (Stan Lee tribute) head. It's ironic that the head already had blue skin, although I repainted it a different blue.
